How to choose the right goals to focus on
Choosing the right goals to begin with is vital to your
goal setting success. If you're just beginning
to build your wealth, for example, deciding to make a million
dollars in your first six months might be a challenge beyond
what you're ready for. You can certainly work to that, but
first it's important to recognize the all important first
steps.
You can choose to work any goal that you feel is necessary
for your health, stability and happiness. And you should begin
by evaluating a goal on those criteria.
Will this goal, if achieved, increase my health? Will it
create more stability for me? Will it ultimately provide me
with a greater level of happiness?
If the answer to any of these questions is a "no"
or even a "maybe", then cross it off your list.
Goal Setting is Personal Planning
Goal setting is nothing more than a formal process for personal
planning. By setting goals on a steady basis you decide what
you want to achieve, and then move in a step-by-step manner
towards the achievement of these goals. While there is a magic
inherent in setting goals, their achievement is often a matter
of executing steps.
The process of setting goals and targets allows you
to choose where you want to go in life. By knowing exactly
what you want to achieve, you know what you have to concentrate
on to do it. A goal is a definite intention to create something
and the more focus you apply to your goal, the more likely
you are to be successful.
"Intention is powerful in proportion
to the narrowness of its focus." - Neville
Goal setting is a standard technique used by professional
athletes, successful business people and high achievers in
all fields. It gives you long term vision and provides you
with short term motivation.
It helps to focus your attention and knowledge which helps
you to organize your resources. By setting sharp and clearly
defined goals, you can measure and take pride in the achievement
of those goals. You can see forward progress in what might
previously have seemed a long pointless effort.
By setting goals, you will also raise your self
confidence, as you recognize your and ability to meet
the goals that you have set. The process of achieving goals
and seeing this achievement gives you confidence that you
will be able to achieve higher and more difficult goals later
on.
Goals are set on a number of different levels.
First, you decide what you want to do with your life and
what large scale goals you want to achieve. Be careful to
evaluate your goals from an important perspective: "Is
this something I want? Or, is this something I think will
please someone else?"
Second, you break your goals down into the smaller objectives,
or mileposts. If you want to run a marathon, begin by planning
a jog around the block. Follow that with completing a mile,
then two, then five. Keep your focus on the next milepost
- and not necessarily on the ultimate goal. This will help
you to stay positive about your progress and build your confidence
- and enthusiasm as you go.
Finally, once you have your plan, you start working towards
achieving it.
It's my opinion that the great value of goals is to bring
to surface your limitations. You will get stuck along the
way. That's the time to seek support - a friend you can count
on, or a personal
coach. We all hold onto limiting beliefs and feelings
- goals only serve to help us grow by bringing those limiting
beliefs and feelings to the surface to be resolved. I recommend
a program called the
Abundance Course to learn how to quickly and easily dissolve
those limiting thoughts and feelings.
